About DocumentsUI

DocumentsUI is a system file picker that lets apps securely request access to your files.

DocumentsUI provides the standard permission and selection interface that appears when an app asks you to attach, open, or save a document. It is part of Android’s Mainline components and receives updates independently, so the experience stays consistent across devices while still allowing manufacturers to theme the interface. Many devices include it by default and it works with the Storage Access Framework that app developers rely on. On newer Android versions, general file browsing inside DocumentsUI may be disabled, so you will only see it when an app needs a file. The optional Files launcher icon can be shown or hidden by the device maker.

DocumentsUI features

Secure file selection

DocumentsUI lets you grant an app access to only the files you choose. When an app uses the standard pick action, you select a file and DocumentsUI provides scoped access to that exact item.

Privacy focused permissions

DocumentsUI follows a strict permission model. The special document management permission is signature protected, and apps interact with DocumentsUI through stable system APIs designed to protect your data.

Independent updates

DocumentsUI is an updatable Mainline module. Therefore it can receive new capabilities and fixes without requiring a full system upgrade, which keeps the file picker reliable over time.

Consistent yet customizable interface

DocumentsUI maintains a familiar layout across devices. In addition, partners can apply runtime resource overlays to align the look with device themes while preserving core behavior for users.

Works with many apps

DocumentsUI responds to common system intents such as selecting content or opening a document. And it supports multiple storage locations exposed by providers, so apps can request files from local or external sources.

Clear scope of use

DocumentsUI is a picker and permission UI, not a full file manager. Starting with newer Android versions, built in browsing is limited, so you primarily see it when an app requests a document.

How to use DocumentsUI for file picking

DocumentsUI appears when an app asks you to attach, open, or save a file. You do not need to launch it directly. Follow these steps to complete a file selection safely and quickly.

  1. Open an app that supports attachments or uploads, such as email, chat, or a note taking app.

  2. Tap the attach or upload button and choose the option to pick a document or file.

  3. When DocumentsUI opens, browse the shown folders and providers, or use search to find the needed file.

  4. Select the file to preview details, then confirm. After that, DocumentsUI grants the requesting app access only to the selected item.

  5. If the app asks for a folder, choose the Select folder option in DocumentsUI. Then approve access so the app can work with files inside that folder according to its request.

FAQs

What is DocumentsUI used for?

DocumentsUI provides the system interface for selecting files and granting an app permission to a specific document. When you attach a file or open a document from another app, DocumentsUI handles the selection and access control so the app only sees what you approve.

Does DocumentsUI support cloud storage providers?

Yes. DocumentsUI shows any storage provider that integrates with the Android Storage Access Framework through a documents provider. This can include cloud services offered by other apps, so you can pick files stored locally or in the cloud within the same picker.

How can I enable the hidden file explorer in DocumentsUI?

On newer Android versions, general browsing inside DocumentsUI is intentionally disabled, so there is no switch to turn on a full explorer. Some devices may display a Files launcher icon, yet the manufacturer can hide it. DocumentsUI will still appear when an app needs you to pick a file.
