VPN Related Introduction

A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network over a public network and allows users to send and receive data on shared or public networks as if their computing devices are directly connected to the private network. Applications that work across the VPN can therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network.

Individual Internet users can secure their transactions with a VPN, to circumvent geographic restrictions and censorship, or to connect to proxy servers for the purpose of protecting their personal identity and location. However, some Internet sites block access to known VPN technology to prevent evasion of their geo-constraints.

VPNs can not make online connections completely anonymous, but can often increase privacy and security. To prevent the disclosure of private information, VPNs typically only allow remote authenticated access using tunneling protocols and cryptographic techniques.

Mobile virtual private networks are used in configurations where a VPN endpoint is not fixed on a single IP address, but roaming across multiple networks, such as cellular service providers or between multiple Wi-Fi access points. Mobile VPNs have been widely used in public security where they provide law enforcement with access to mission-critical applications such as computer-aided shipment and criminal databases while traveling between different subnets of a mobile network.
