Utopia is an imaginary community or society with qualities that are very coveted or almost perfect. Utopian ideals often emphasize egalitarian principles of equality in the fields of economics, government, and justice — even though they do not mean exclusively — with methods and structures of proposed implementations that vary based on ideology. According to the Lyman Tower Sargent, "there are socialists, capitalists, monarchists, democratic, anarchist, ecological, feminist, patriarchal, egalitarian, hierarchical, racist, left-wing, right-wing, reformist, free love, nuclear family, extended family, gay, lesbian, and more utopians ". [1]
This word was created from Greek by Sir Thomas More for his Utopia book in Latin which was published in 1516; the book describes a society on a fictional island on the Atlantic Ocean. This term is then used to describe both the intentional community that seeks to create an ideal society, as well as the imaginary society described in the work of fiction. Various alternative views regarding the structural and qualitative attributes of society have given rise to other concepts, the most notable of which is dystopia.
