Rastas, or the Rastafari Movement, is a new religious movement that recognizes Haile Selassie I, the former emperor of Ethiopia, as the King of Kings, the Master of Lords and the Lion of Judah as Yah (the Rastafari name for God, which is the short form of Jehovah found in the Psalms 68: 4 in the King James Version), and part of the Holy Trinity. The name Rastafari comes from Ras Täfäri, the name Haile Selassie I before he was crowned emperor. This movement appeared in Jamaica among working-class blacks and peasants in the early 1930s, derived from an interpretation of biblical prophecy, black social and political aspirations, and the teachings of their prophet, a black Jamaican publisher and organizer, Marcus Garvey, whose political and cultural vision helped to create a new worldview. This movement is sometimes called "Rastafarianism"; but this is considered inappropriate and offensive to many Rastas.
