Along with the importance of the optical properties of the atmosphere, the night sky radiance differs with the so-called emission patterns. SkyMe has the intention of integrating all the factors dealing with the emission function of ground based light sources. The emission function normally considers the public lighting system, which is in fact the main generator of skyglow. However, other less controlled light-emitting devices are gaining importance with urbanisation and the expansion of cities. Hence, it is necessary to analyse the contribution of headlights, billboards, windows, and monuments to the brightness of the night sky.
For this reason, we are asking for your help in order to gather this valuable information!
SkyMe depends fundamentally on the convergence and participation of the general public and the international scientific community. There are two efforts that support the project: the SkyMe website and the app itself for mobile devices. Aligned to the institutional efforts on the International Day of Light, the website is a digital space of conjunction among the actors of the project: academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, the scientific community, the general public, and the users of the application.
