For a summer night, the air was cold and the sky was clouded with an odd sort of film that cast the streets of the district in an ominous light. It was almost as if something evil lurked out there in the shadows. As the ceremony was set to begin, a figure burst from the tree lines, but the moment her feet hit the pavement, she threw up her hands just as our troops raised their weapons. Standing down from the dais, I stood before the firing squad. "Stand down," I ordered-- my first command as the new head of the district operations unit. The warriors lowered their guns and my sister approached, the look of guilt writ across her face clear as day. Her head bowed, she muttered an apology for her tardiness. "You were spying again, weren't you?" I asked. She didn't answer, which admitted as much fault as if she had. My sister was ambitious, and despite trying to protect her from the wars of the realms, she'd done everything she could to integrate herself in this world of death and destruction. As orphans, we were always close, but as I moved through the ranks of our faction, she felt abandoned. I knew this despite her lack of protest. Instead of being mad at me when I wouldn't come home some nights, she made up her mind to join me. I of course, had not condoned this, and until recently, I didn't even know she'd begun work as an undercover spy, but my new position gave me access to this sensitive information. What she was doing was dangerous, and if she wasn't careful, she could get herself killed. In fact, that's exactly what happened. Unknowingly, she'd led a fellow spy to our headquarters and that fateful day, instead of an inauguration, our district was besieged by enemy soldiers. My sister was one the first to lose her life. I couldn't be angry at her for leading these foes to our base, for I was mourning her before I could feel anger. Now I am on a mission not only to uphold my position and defend our district- I am also on a mission to avenge her death.
