The Mutt navigator dragged by the tail into the modern (Android 6 to 10) world.

The original Mutt navigator has been dragged by the tail into the modern (Android 6 onward) world (compatible with Android 4.0 upwards). I believed this app to be complete and stopped maintaining it, which was arrogant as something always breaks when a new version of Android is released. I have updated the app for Android 9 and 10.

Designed by and for me as a sailor as a practical app that works at sea. It is not intended to be a chart plotter; it gives you the features of a simple hand held GPS with much, much more.

No mobile network coverage is necessary. This app uses your device's built in GPS. All that is required is a clear view of the sky (the GPS signal propagates through wood and GRP; the app should work below deck on all but metal boats).

In short...

•Re-written user interface being the navigator into the modern world, using the Android5 and 6 user interface components.

•Limited support for GPX files (a common XML based interchange format used by many navigation devices). Waypoints or individual routes can be exported as GPX files. Waypoints can me imported from GPX files.

•Rapid entry mode for new waypoints.

•Make logs of where you have been, which you can annotate. I believe the log feature is refined enough to allow you to dispense with paper logs; I do.

•View logs as display on the phone.

•Share logs with Google Google Earth either on your phone or desktop computer.

If you have a previous version of the navigator then waypoints, this app should detect existing data from the previous version in a completely seamless way.

Preserved and refined original features include

•Designed by and for a sailor. You may find that some of the main layouts look “big and blobby”. Trust me, bog and blobby works at sea. Small and fiddly layouts do not.

•Store unlimited waypoints and routes.

•View waypoints alphabetically of by distance from your current position.

•Waypoints can have notes associated with them.

•Waypoints can be exported and viewed on Google Earth or as GPX file format.

•Display range and bearing to a waypoint.

•Routes (ordered list of waypoints) are included. A route can be exported and viewed on Google Earth or as GPX file format.

•When a waypoint is reached, a waypoint alarm can advance you to the next waypoint in a route.

•ETA to waypoint and VMG to waypoint are available.

•Cross track error intended for coastal navigation not for great circle navigation.

•If you are a sailing boat, engine hours can easily be logged.

•Crew on watch can now be selected; hours are now logged.

•The log service can be paused.

•Logs can be exported and shared (by email) either as KML documents (viewable with Google Earth) or HTML documents (viewable in any web browser).

•A barometer monitoring service is available for phones that support a barometer sensor (not many phones do). You can view barometer readings recorded for the last three days, and the barometer service continued to run if you leave the app, make phone calls or whatever.

•Anchor alarm watch service. Alerts you if you have moved more than a pre-defined distance. Sadly as of January 2019, and due to a change in Google's policies, the app will lo longer be able to send SMS text messages if your boat moves while at anchor.

•Limited text to speech on the "Waypoints" view.

•Once started, the log, anchor and waypoint alarm services will continue to run, even if you quit the main navigator application. They will continue to run while you make phone calls or use your phone for email, Internet browsing or pretty much anything else.
