Basic Chess Terms
Check: The king is under attack and must move, be blocked, or have the attacking piece captured.
Checkmate: The king is in check with no legal escape, ending the game in a win for the attacker.
Stalemate: The player to move has no legal moves and is not in check, resulting in a draw.
Castling: A special move where the king moves two squares toward a rook, and the rook jumps over it, for safety and activation.
En Passant: A special pawn capture that can occur immediately after an opponent moves a pawn two squares forward from its starting position.
Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it is replaced by a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
