The ICD-9 stands for International Classification of Diseases, ninth edition, published in 1977 by the World Health Organization-WHO-and whose aim is to classify diseases, conditions and external causes of disease and injury, to compile useful health information related deaths, disease and injury (mortality and morbidity).

Although the current version is the tenth edition, ICD-10, ICD-9 is still used in some countries.
