The story begins with the life of a high school student named Ichigo Kurosaki in Karakura Town who can see spirits. At first Ichigo can only see the ordinary spirit of the deceased, but it changes when one day he meets a woman dressed in black kimono in her room. The woman is a shinigami named Rukia Kuchiki. His arrival was caused by the spiritual power of a hollow, an evil spirit. The hollow in question suddenly came and attacked Ichigo's family because of feeling the great spiritual power of Ichigo.

Ichigo then engages in a fight with a hollow that has hurt his family, although Rukia is supposed to fight the hollow already forbade Ichigo before. Unfortunately in the process of unintentional happening, Ichigo takes all of Rukia's spiritual power and makes him lose his shinigami powers. As a result, Ichigo then incarnate as a shinigami and defeat the hollow.
