Block Drop

Drop blocks onto an 8x8 board. Fill a row or a column and it clears. Simple to pick up, and there is always one more move worth thinking about.

You get three pieces at a time. They cannot be rotated, so the puzzle is working out the order: which piece goes where, and what that leaves you for the next two.

A BLOCK PUZZLE THAT PLAYS FAIR

Most games in this genre will eventually hand you three pieces that cannot all be placed, and the run ends through no fault of yours. Block Drop does not do that. Before a new set is dealt, the game works out an order that empties the whole tray on the board as it stands — clearing lines along the way — and only deals pieces it has proved you can play. If you lose, it is because of a move you made.

And when a run does end, the game shows you why: the pieces that would not fit shake in place before the score appears, so you can see what happened instead of guessing.

TWO WAYS TO PLAY

• Classic — no clock, no pressure. Play until you genuinely run out of room.

• Time Attack — three minutes, and every line you clear buys two more seconds. A good run keeps extending itself.

Each mode keeps its own best score.

ONE TAKE-BACK PER RUN

Put a piece in the wrong place and you can undo it once. Board, score and clock all go back exactly as they were. One per run — enough to fix a slip of the finger, not enough to remove the puzzle.
