A beginners guide to all-natural makeup
Thinking of going green? Dr. Hauschka's International Makeup Artist tells us where to start and what you need to know about natural makeup
Natural makeup has come a long way to compete with its chemical counterparts. If you're considering the switch but are wondering where to start, this could make things clearer. We posed our questions - and concerns - to Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka's International Makeup Artist, who cleared things up nicely. Over to the expert:
How is 'natural' makeup defined?
Natural make up is defined through the ingredients and manufacturing process within each product. Also, credentials like 'BDIH' [an independent German association recognised globally for setting ecological and ethical standards] and 'NATURE' are great indications that a product has valued natural and organic ingredients, hence you know the makeup is as 'natural' as possible. Look out for this on the packaging.
Is using natural products as important as eating a natural diet?
Whatever is happening on the outside is normally an indication of what's happening on the inside; it's one cycle, so yes. You wouldn't invest in only organic food to then counteract it with a chemical based makeup. Neither is more important, you just need a balance of the two to really reap the benefits of a healthy, natural lifestyle.
What should we be aware of when switching to all-natural makeup?
Give it time, your skin cells naturally takes 28-30 days to regenerate so give yourself this as a benchmark to really see the benefits of using natural skincare and makeup.
Where should we start in the switch to natural makeup?
I'd first invest in products that are around the entry points of the body – eyes, lips – because we e consume so much of the makeup on our faces, 4kg of lip product in your lifetime to be exact. So to cut down on this, I'd recommend starting with lipsticks, lip liners and any of our eye products too.

Will our natural makeup have a shorter shelf life?
Within some natural products and makeup this is the case, at Dr. Hauschka we don't use any parabens [a chemical preservative found in cosmetics that are questioned for their association in causing certain forms of breast cancer] and have developed an alcohol-free preservative to make sure our products are as fresh as possible for as long as possible.
What are some natural 'hero ingredients' that we should look out for?
Rose oil, witch hazel and analysis are the most common ingredients within the Dr. Hauschka Make Up collection; this is because of their skincare benefits mainly – we look at our makeup as skin treatments too. However we are always developing new natural formulations, and we have created the new foundations so that they are vegan by using a range of new ingredients together including pomegranate, coconut oil and macadamia nut.
