About ZRP Traffic Fines - Zimbabwe Republic Police

English

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) traffic fines for motorists on Zimbabwean roads.

Are you TIRED of not knowing the legal and accurate Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) traffic fines for motorists on Zimbabwean roads?

Are you tired of being overcharged by some unscrupulous and corrupt traffic police illegally doing so on Zimbabwean roads or of being forced to pay a bribe out of your hard earned money?

If your answer is yes to either one of the two questions, this app is for you!

Its a list of the OFFICIAL fines that guilty motorists must pay as far as Zimbabwe Government’s Traffic Regulations are concerned. This list of all the legal traffic fines in Zimbabwe has been derived from the (ZRP) Schedule of Deposit Fines. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) uses a Schedule of Deposit Fines (Fines) for a range of traffic offences discovered during roadblock or roadside checks by the national traffic police officers.

The traffic police officers were issued with the 2016 Zimbabwe Republic Police National Traffic Schedule of Deposit Fines in February of 2016 from which these summaries are drawn from. An update of the fines (which we have included) was widely announced on the 30th of March.

The app also has contact phone numbers for various police stations across the country are available for the motorists to call in case of an emergency.

Road side assistance companies and contact numbers are also provided in the app to further assist the motorist on the road.

The ZRP cannot lawfully impose a spot fine above $20 (Level 3) as this is prohibited by Section 356 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act. Fines higher than level 3 can only be imposed by a magistrate after a court appearance. The maximum punishment that can be imposed by a magistrate for traffic offences under the Regulations is $200 (a Level 5 fine) and a period of imprisonment not exceeding six months, in terms of section 87 of the Regulations.

Spot fines are NOT MANDATORY, it must be the willingness or choosing of the accused person to pay the fine instead of appearing in court. The police SHOULD NOT insist on the payment of a spot fine where the road user is not in a position to do so immediately or where the offence is being contested.

If you do not want to admit guilt, your case will be forwarded to the respective magistrate, the time and date of your summons will be stated on the ticket. You can submit your version of the events to the magistrate for consideration.

What can you do on the spot if you disagree with the accusation or expect corruption?

If charged with an offense and disagreeing with the officer you might:

- Check that the officer has a force number

- Ask for the legal basis of your alleged offense

- Always request a ticket - Ask to see the superior of the respective officer

- Call the National Complaints Line of the Zimbabwean Republic Police: (04) 703 631

- Not admit guilt and appear at the magistrates court

Keep in mind that even the attempt to bribe is punishable by law with up to twenty years in prison!

Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Inspector Muhoni has brought good news to many motorists who are forced to pay unscrupulous fines by police. The police boss has revealed that anyone who is made to pay a fine at a traffic roadblock and is not sure how much he should have paid must immediately take the admission of guilt receipt to the nearest police station and get confirmation if they had been rightfully charged. If over charged they can immediately get their money refunded.

Sergeant Mujuru who handles National Police Complaints also echoed Muhoni’s sentiments saying that anyone who feels cheated has a right to call the National Complaints Hotline on 04 703631 where their complaints will be attended to immediately.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police recently also launched a national WhatsApp hotline where members of the public can register their complaints to the police via Whatsapp. The ZRP National Whatsapp hotline number is +263782475000.
