Superstition prevailed in the times before Islam and the idolators (mushrikeen) believed giving opposite meaning of a name you would protect the child from having that trait or charateristic. This is likely why so many of the companions had names that were so strange, and were told to change their names by the prophet, peace be upon him.

Why names with Meanings?

Muslims must choose a name that has a righteous meaning, that will befit and bring blessings to the child throughout his or her life. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names. (Hadith Abu Dawud).
