Goddess Kali originated from the forehead or brow of Maa Durga in order to kill the demons Shimbhu and Nishumbhu. When the slaying began Maa Kali became so involved in the battle with the demons and the bloodshed that she lost all control and started destroying everything in her path. Shiva on seeing Kali's blood thirst decided to act to protect mankind from the imminent slaughter. He cleverly threw himself under her feet and stunned Kali. Astonished, Kali, stuck her tongue out knowing she had made a mistake. She stopped, realized what she was doing and put an end to the blood shed.
Kali is the Shakti aspect of Shiva, without which Shiva is inactive. She therefore represents the vital energy, force, the dynamic power of the Brahman, which Lord Shiva represents. Ma Kali destroys ignorance, dispels fear and protects us from all things evil.
