Jem-EUSO is a new type of observatory that will utilize very large volumes of the earth's atmosphere as a detector of the most energetic particles in the Universe.

JEM-EUSO (Jem for Japanese Experiment Module and EUSO for "Extreme Universe Space Observatory") observes the brief flashes of light in the earth's atmosphere caused by particles arriving from deep space. The key element of the sensor is a very wide-field, very fast, large-lense telescope that can detect extreme energy particles with energy above 10^19 eV
