Situated on a small tributary of Rio Grande, this cultural heritage site is the best preserved of the Pueblos culture north of the Mexico border. A rural community in 1400, Taos was similar to the Mesa Verde or the ancient Pueblo people at Chaco Canyon. Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark.
