Killing enemies grants you expirence. After reaching next ship level you recive passive ship skill, like more ammo, health restoration or bigger explosions, there is 20 of them to choose.

Also, after killing the boss you recieve one of the 20 totally different weapons, like homing missiles, double guns, or even nukes.

Every ship has one or more passive abilities.
