Kirchhellen is the northernmost municipality of Bottrop. 1976, he became incorporated as originally belonging to a county municipality of the district of Recklinghausen against considerable resistance from the people. The place name derives from Church on the Hill (Light) from what refers to the location of the original church of the parish of St. John. This church, which was destroyed by fire in 1917, stood at the church square, just a few hundred meters from the current site of the parish church away.
