The Mool Mantar, also known as the Mul Mantra, is the foundational statement of Sikhism, authored by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of the Sikhs. It encapsulates the core beliefs and principles of Sikh philosophy and spirituality. The Mool Mantar is as follows:
ਇਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ (Ik Oankaar) - There is one universal creator.
ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ (Sat Naam - His name is truth.
ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ (Karta Purakh) - He is the creator.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ (Nirbhau Nirvair) - He is without fear and without hate.
ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ (Akaal Moorat) - He is timeless and formless.
ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ (Ajoonee Saibhang) - He is not born and self-existent.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ (Gur Prasaad) - He is realized by Guru's grace.
The Mool Mantar emphasizes the oneness of God, the truth of His name, and His attributes of creation, fearlessness, and absence of enmity. It acknowledges His timeless and formless nature, beyond birth, and self-sustaining. Finally, it recognizes that realization of God's presence comes through the grace of the Guru.
This profound mantra serves as a concise summary of Sikh beliefs, guiding principles, and the spiritual journey towards understanding and realizing the divine truth.
