How mehndi works as a temporary dye on the skin is a very interesting concept. The crushed leaves of henna when made into a paste and applied to the body undergo an oxidation reaction. With the help of this reaction, the dye gets absorbed on to the superficial layers of the skin, giving a temporary color.
