In the past, rig crews were forced to carry heavy reference books and manuals in the pickup trucks or rely on memory. When calculations had to be made, they had to stop, look up the right equation or hoped they remembered the correct equation and manually perform the calculation. Even with scientific calculators and 3x5 plastic reference cards, there was always the potential for error.
