Cassidy was born at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York City, the son of singer and actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward. His father was made up of half of Irish descent and half of German descent, and his mother was punished by Irish Colonial Americans and Swiss. Some of his mother's ancestors were one of the founders of Newark, New Jersey.

Cassidy's father, Jack, is credited for putting his son to sleep with his first manager. After signing a contract with Universal Studios in 1969, Jack introduced him to former table tennis champion and close friend Ruth Aarons, who later found his niche as a talent manager, given his theater background. Aarons had represented Jack and Shirley Jones a few years earlier, and later represented his half-brother Cassidy, Shaun. Aarons became an authority figure and a close friend of Cassidy, and was the driving force behind the success on his screen. After making a small reward from Screen Gems for his work at The Partridge Family during the first season, Aarons found a loophole in his contract and renegotiated it with far superior requirements, and a four-year duration, a rare requirement at the time.
