LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY

Lexington, nicknamed the heart of Kentucky, is centrally located in the state, and is the second-largest city in Kentucky. The City of Lexington, combined with Fayette County, makes up Greater Lexington. Named 6th Best Value City by Kiplinger in 2011, Lexington's cost of living is low compared to cities with similar populations. Ranked 5.3 percent less than the average of other Kentucky cities, and 14.7% less that the national average, overall housing, entertainment, and utility expenses tend to remain below the national average.

Lexington is famous for horses and basketball. Home to the Kentucky Horse Park, the Red Mile, and Keenland race tracks, its culture is rich in thoroughbred horses. It is also the home of the famous University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats have appeared in 53 NCAA basketball tournaments and claimed eight championship titles.

Lexington is listed as tenth in the U.S. for college graduates. Approximately 39.5% of all residents have graduated college with at least a four-year degree. The median household income is $39,813, and the median family income is $53,264. The population in 2010 was 295,803, and is expecting future growth of around 4.3 percent.

The City's infrastructure has two major interstates. I-64 and I-75 run through the city center along with several state and U.S. routes. Currently, high traffic volumes during rush hour cause traffic jams and delays. The city is currently working on ways to alleviate this problem through road improvements, staggering work and school hours, telecommuting jobs, and making the city more bike and pedestrian friendly.
