Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and rivals London as the most populous in Europe, with

15,067,724 inhabitants in its metropolitan area in 2018. The vast majority of the population is

Muslim, but there are also large numbers of lay people and a tiny minority of Christians and

Jews.

It is the capital of the metropolitan area (büyükşehir) and the province of Istanbul, which is

part of the Marmara region. In the past it was the administrative capital of the Province of

Istanbul, in the so-called Rumelia or East Thrace.
