Wattpad is an application that allows you to share new stories with other people. It can be used through your website, through a computer or from the app on your mobile. Users can publish articles, stories, poems, blogs, fan-fictions, science fiction and stories on a variety of topics, either online or through the Wattpad application (for iOS and Android, Windows Phone or Online). The content includes works by both unknown and known authors. Users can comment on and vote for the stories or join groups associated with the website. Around 50% of demand comes from the USA, and to a lesser extent also from the UK, Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, Australia, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Bolivia.

Wattpad has several small contests. The largest annual competition is called the "Wattys Awards". In 2011, The Wattys Awards introduced three entry levels (popular, rising, and undiscovered) to provide greater chances of winning for each level of writer. The contests are open to anyone who has a story posted on Wattpad.

During the summer of 2012 Wattpad, in collaboration with Margaret Atwood (Canadian poet, novelist and literary critic), held the "Wattys", the first major poetry competition that offered Wattpad poets the opportunity to compete against each other in one of two categories, as either "enthusiasts" or "competitors".
