Sketches are images of the work of someone who is generally not or has not been used as the final work. Sketches are made with a specific purpose such as: to record things that the artist sees, develops ideas that will be used, or how to briefly describe or describe principles, ideas, or imagery.

The media used to create sketches can vary. On dry media, sketches can be done using silverpoint, pencil, charcoal, pastel, or graphite. It can also use ink and pen, ballpoint pen, oil paint and watercolors.

Sketches that use watercolors and oil paints are commonly referred to as "watercolor sketches" or "oil paint sketches". For three-dimensional work, an artist or sculptor can sketch dati plastisin, wax, or clay.
