Antimicrobials are a very large group of extraordinarily effective and complex drugs. Since its discovery 70 years ago, they have saved millions of lives and allowed medical advances, becoming indispensable for treating most bacterial infectious drugs.

The development of antimicrobial resistance, the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria and the lack of alternative treatments, are one of the biggest public health problems today. Although there are many factors that favor the selection and dissemination of antibiotic resistance, inappropriate and indiscriminate use of them is one of the main factors contributing to this phenomenon.

The use of antimicrobials in the hospital environment is improved in 30-50% of cases. The existence of resistant organisms and their variability between hospitals and even within different areas of the same hospital requires a good knowledge of the local microbial epidemiology. The optimum selection of the antimicrobial and its dosage in different infectious syndromes also require specific training and updated.

With the aim of promoting better use of antimicrobials Commission of Hospital Infection Hospital Son Espases (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) has been updated with this third edition action protocols in infectious diseases.

With the app format manual protocols we want to facilitate the dissemination and use of these protocols, and make them accessible and easy to read so that they are useful in daily clinical practice. You can also access protocols with complete bibliography from the home page for further study.

The application is intended for medical and pharmaceutical in general and encompasses both general aspects of antimicrobial use (prevention of the development of resistance, dosage renal and hepatic, dosing obese, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic patients, etc.), as guides concrete treatment apparatus (respiratory, digestive, urinary, etc.). It should be borne in mind that it is local recommendations based on the specific situations of our center and information antibiotic sensitivity provided by the Microbiology Department of Espases Hospital, so some of the recommendations must be interpreted and adapted to the location of the reader.
