Google Maps has a long-time running with competitors such as Apple Maps (available only on Apple products), MapQuest, and many other third-party apps that you probably don't use anymore. With the rise of Google Maps... Even IPhone users have it and they don't use their designated Apple Maps. What's so special about it?
Maps is a very simple app, regardless of all the information it displays. The very first thing most people do is search for locations using the search bar at the top. It works, so no harm, no foul. If you wanted to, you can also slide right from the left edge and navigate to "offline maps". This area makes it possible for you to download any and all of the places you go on a daily basis, keeping data usage to a minimum. Offline maps update as needed and refresh every 20-30 days.
Maps gives you destination times, which side of the road your location will be on, and travel times for walking, biking, motorcycling, driving, or even using public transportation. If you give it the right permissions, it'll even give you traffic info regularly (example: Crash on I-4. Traffic is slow on [a nearby street]).
You are also capable of setting your home location and work location, as well as how you get back and forth. This helps Google show you the best route there and back every morning and evening and how long it'll take (for those of you who leave for work at the last second).
