This words-only hymnal was first published in 1814 by William Gadsby, a Gospel Standard Strict and Particular Baptist minister. Over the following century, it was expanded to include, in addition to the original selection of hymns by various authors, all of Gadsby's hymns; almost all of Joseph Hart's hymns; two supplements of hymns by various authors; and a small group of hymns for special occasions. In total, it contains 1146 hymns, most of both great Scriptural fidelity and considerable beauty, and the collection is still in general use among the Strict and Particular Baptists.
In addition to certain practical considerations, Gadsby said he made his collection "to have a selection of hymns in one book free from Arminianism, and sound in the faith, that the church might be edified and God glorified."
