About Forest Fire Glossary

English

The MEFISTO European Forest Fire Fighting Multilanguage Glossary

The project MEDITERRANEAN FOREST FIRE FIGHTING TRAINING STANDARDIZATION" – MEFISTO funded by European DG ECHO (DIRECTORATE GENERAL EUROPEAN CIVIL PROTECTION AND HUMANITARIAN AID OPERATIONS), in 2016, aims to raise the preparedness level through an efficient and standardized training protocol developed by a representative network of Mediterranean stakeholders, addressing to new opportunities for interoperability between Mediterranean training centers, allowing international cooperation against disasters related to forest fires.

The establishment of a common language is crucial for increasing effective collaboration during fire fighting activities, having a key role in the sharing of experiences and knowledge between different countries. Through a shared standardization of terms and concepts MEFISTO Project ( https://www.mefistoforestfires.eu ) produced the European Forest Fire Fighting Multilanguage Glossary, available both in ready-to-print PDF version ( https://www.mefistoforestfires.eu/content/common-terminology-and-good-practices ) and as a multulanguage glossary mobile app for forest fire professionals and specialist.

The MEFISTO European Forest Fire Fighting Multilanguage Glossary mobile app allows a quick translation of terms and definitions among the five languages. A search function makes very easy to search for translation of specific terms. Another function allows sorting the terms included in the glossary in alphabetical order.

The glossary have been produced joining three already available glossaries:

European Glossary for Wildfires and Forest Fires

Alpine Forest Fire Glossary

Forest Fire Fighting Terms Handbook

Starting from these “solid bases”, new terms suggested by forest fire experts and incident commanders from all of the MEFISTO partners’ countries has been added, translating all of the terms and definition in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.
