Heavy metal, or simply metal, is a genus musicalque born in the mid-sixties and early seventies in the United Kingdom and the United States, whose origins come from the blues rock, hard rock and psychedelic rock. It is characterized mainly by its strong and distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, the sounds of the bass and drums are denser than usual and generally acute voices.

Until today there is no clear consensus defining which was the first heavy metal band, some mention Aled Zeppelin and Deep Purple, while others leave that place of honor only to Black Sabbath. In the mid-seventies, Judas Priest introduced the combination of double bass with fast rhythms in semicorchea bass and guitar, and eliminated the last blues influences that came to define the genre. Meanwhile, Motorhead included some elements of punk rock, giving it a new emphasis on aggression and speed. Similarly, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal led by Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon, followed the same current during the late seventies and early eighties.

With the arrival of the eighties began to appear the first subgenres of metal; for the glam metal side led sales and the charts of the major markets and on the other extreme metal coming from the escenaunderground. The latter came up with a wide popularity led thrash metal Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. However, in the decade that commercial success waned with the rise of new alternative sounds, primarily grunge.

There is currently a myriad of subgenres, each with specific characteristics and influences of other styles like classical music, industrial music, funk and rap, for example, they have expanded the definition of metal. In turn, its popularity has increased in recent years mainly in Europe, US, Latin America and Japan.
