The jungle myna (Acridotheres fuscus) is a myna, a member of the starling family. Greyish myna with elongated and hackled forehead feathers directed upwards in mid-line to form short, bristle-like frontal crest.

This bird is a common resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Burma east to Indonesia.

This common passerine is typically found in forest and cultivation. The jungle myna builds a nest in hole.Most of the time they build nest in the hole of Palm Tree.The normal clutch is three to six eggs.

These 23-centimetre (9.1 in) long birds have grey plumage, darker on the head and wings. There are large white wing patches obvious in flight, and a white tail tip. The head has a forehead tuft. The bill and strong legs are bright yellow, and there is no bare skin around eye. The southern Indian race has a blue iris. The sexes are similar, but juveniles are browner.

They are usually found close to water or rice fields.

Like most starlings, the jungle myna is fairly omnivorous, eating fruit, grain and insects.

Least Concern :

There has been an influx of Mynas due to the presence of the juvenile Asian Koel. The majority are Common Mynas but a number of Jungle Mynas also turn up when the Koel calls. this Jungle Myna with odd plumage. It has the classical blue at the base of the bill, but the plumage is pale compared to the usual Jungle Mynas. The yellow iris supports an adult. The other Jungle Myna who was present did not socially accept this bird and it was displaced from feeding on a papaya. I had considered a hybrid.

Malaysian population of Jungle Myna, known since the 19the century. In fact, the name 'torquatus' is based on one of these variants (from Pahang) that the describer, W.R. Davison, thought at the time was a separate species. Davison's original aberrant Jungle specimens were collected in Pahang at least 50 years before any other Myna species, House included, invaded the Malay states.

Acridotheres fuscus is native to India and south-east Asia and is now established in many Pacific islands. Acridotherea can be translated as "grasshopper hunter" - presumably an indication of its major food source in some parts of its native region. It is perceived as a problem to agricultural sectors dependant on crops. Both rural villages and urban areas are at risk of invasion. They feed off rubbish and food scraps and nest in any available spaces in houses and buildings. This behaviour and their close association with human habitations combine to cause a wide variety of problems for humans.
