শিশুর জন্মের পর তার জন্য একটি সুন্দর ইসলামী নাম রাখা প্রত্যেক মুসলিম পিতা-মাতার কর্তব্য। মুসলিম বিশ্বের অন্যান্য অঞ্চলের মুসলিমদের ন্যায় বাংলাদেশের মুসলিমদের মাঝেও ইসলামী সংস্কৃতি ও মুসলিম ঐতিহ্যের সাথে মিল রেখে শিশুর নাম নির্বাচন করার আগ্রহ দেখা যায়। এজন্য তাঁরা নবজাতকের নাম নির্বাচনে পরিচিত আলেম-ওলামাদের শরণাপন্ন হন। তবে সত্যি কথা বলতে কী এ বিষয়ে আমাদের পড়াশুনা একেবারে অপ্রতুল। তাই ইসলামী নাম রাখার আগ্রহ থাকার পরও অজ্ঞতাবশত আমরা এমনসব নাম নির্বাচন করে ফেলি যেগুলো আদৌ ইসলামী নামের আওতাভুক্ত নয়। শব্দটি আরবী অথবা কুরআনের শব্দ হলেই নামটি ইসলামী হবে তাতো নয়। কুরআনে তো পৃথিবীর নিকৃষ্টতম কাফেরদের নাম উল্লেখ আছে। ইবলিস, ফেরাউন, হামান, কারুন, আবু লাহাব ইত্যাদি নাম তো কুরআনে উল্লেখ আছে; তাই বলে কী এসব নামে নাম বা উপনাম রাখা সমীচীন হবে!? ব্যক্তির নাম তার স্বভাব চরিত্রের উপর ইতিবাচক অথবা নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলে বলে বর্ণিত আছে। ঘটনাক্রমে দেখা যায় ব্যক্তির নামের সাথে তার স্বভাব ও বৈশিষ্ট্যের মিল থাকে। এটাই আল্লাহর তা‘আলার হেকমতের দাবী। যে ব্যক্তির নামের অর্থে চপলতা রয়েছে তার চরিত্রেও চপলতা পাওয়া যায়। যার নামের মধ্যে গাম্ভীর্যতা আছে তার চরিত্রে গাম্ভীর্যতা পাওয়া যায়। খারাপ নামের অধিকারী লোকের চরিত্রও খারাপ হয়ে থাকে। ভাল নামের অধিকারী ব্যক্তির চরিত্রও ভাল হয়ে থাকে।
