The TakeControl App gives you basic information about mental ill health, recovery, the services and supports available and an introduction to your options. It should be useful to people with self-experience of mental ill health, families and professionals. As far as possible, we have sourced the information from Irish policy, research and opinion. We have also included an extensive list of references that will enable you to continue to read, research and surf the web for more varied information and opinion. Everything in this guide is directed by the idea of mapping a recovery journey for people.

The TakeControl App was developed for Shine Ireland (formerely Schizophrenia Ireland) http://www.shineonline.ie . The online App is an electronic version of their printed booklet "Take Control Of Your Mental Health". If you have a diagnosis of psychosis, schizophrenia, depression or bipolar disorders this app will describe the symptoms, treatment, and medication pertinent to these conditions. The TakeControl App lists the resources available in Ireland from Shine (helplines, drop in centres, and email support) as well as other supports from government and charitable organisations.

The TakeControl App describes the multidisciplinary teams of a modern mental health service. The App describes the impact on the family of mental illness and highlights the importance of the support family and friends provides to the sufferer. The App describes the importance of a good lifestyle and nutrition in the outcome for a sufferer and the negative effects of alcohol, marijuana and street drugs.

The TakeControl App describes the legal system in Ireland and highlights the rights of the sufferer. The stigma suffered by people with a mental illness is discussed and the role of the media is highlighted. The importance of rehabilitation and further training is covered to enable one to return to work and a full life after an illness. Everything in this guide is directed by the idea of mapping a recovery journey for people.
