Gregorian chants

The term Gregorian chant alludes in general to a type of plain chant (simple, monodical and with music subordinated to the text) used in the liturgy of the Catholic Church, although sometimes it is used in a broad sense or even as a synonym of plain chant .

General characteristics:

The scores of the Gregorian chant are written in tetragrama (from the work of Guido d'Arezzo).

It has a rhythm first and foremost subject to the Latin text. It is therefore considered to be of prosodic rhythm.

It is a sung prayer and the expression of a religiosity.

It is a monodic song (there is only one melodic line) and a cappella (lacks instrumental accompaniment), interpreted by male voices. The voices interpret it in choral form (either the complete assembly of the faithful, or the schola cantorum) or in solo form (the celebrant or president of the celebration, or one of the singers of the schola cantorum).

Its text is written in Latin, except for the Kyrie Eleison ("Lord have mercy"), section of the ordinary mass in Greek language.

All Gregorian pieces are always modal, written within one of eight Gregorian modes or ecclesiastical modes (protus, deuterus, tritus and tetrardus, each in its two possible authentic or plagal versions).

The musical form is defined by the text, and by the liturgical context of the text.

The melodic line is preferably moved by joint degrees, and the large intervals in the voice are rare. Normally the line moves by second, third, fourth or fifth.
