Its rules and its universe are sometimes used directly as with Baldur's Gate, other times it served as a foundation for developers, as with Diablo. The rules have evolved over the course of editions in order to balance them and make them both simpler and more intuitive to use, therefore more fun for players. It is, after all, not very funny to die after having misunderstood certain rules, or to have to follow lots of obscure rules to perform an action.
