Field data collection of Corn pest and diseases
Corn (Zea mays) is one of the major agricultural crops in the Philippines. Corn has several uses like for food, feeds and other industrial purposes. Yellow corn comprises 40-60% of animal feeds. About 70% of the total yellow corn produce is used for the processing of animal feeds while 30% is processed into corn flour/starch and corn oil. White corn is generally used for food (corn grits) and processed into other food products like chichacorn/cornik.
There is an increasing demand for yellow and white corn due to increasing requirements of livestock and poultry sectors and increasing demand for food due to increasing population and other industrial uses (i.e. corn syrup, corn starch, corn flour and corn oil) In order to satisfy the requirements of the different sectors, there should be a corresponding increase on the production of corn. But production is challenging due to the occurrence of insect pest and diseases attacking corn plants and effect of climate change. Open pollinated corn varieties are vulnerable to the attack of insect pest especially corn borer and other lepidopterous insects. The above-mentioned reasons significantly reduce the yield of corn.
In order to institute effective management of corn pests, there is a need to develop an effective early warning system. At present, there is no existing monitoring system for pest and diseases of corn hence the purpose of the project.
