Access information about tourist sites in Wales like you have never done before

DigE-Post is a pilot project funded by the Welsh Government and Airbus Group. It is a tourist information system that combines digital information panels, a smart phone application and a tourist information web site. The purpose of the system is to allow visitors to plan their trips to tourist spots within Wales, while providing dynamic and rich multimedia content at the heart of these sites without the need for a mobile Internet connection. The pilot system was installed in Cwmcarn Forest, Caerphilly County, South Wales, during winter 2014.

The purpose of the digE-Post mobile application in relation to the rest of the project is twofold:

■ Allow synchronisation of tourist site information to mobile devices based specifically on the visitors’ interests. This should help with mobile data connectivity problems occurring in many outdoor tourist sites in Wales, while minimizing the amount of data stored on the mobile device.

■ Allow the downloading and playing of quality media content directly from the digital way-posts.

The main areas of functionality are:

■ GPS Navigation - To find a tourist site, trail or way post.

■ Data synchronisation - To download tourist information from our global server directly to your device

■ Mapping - To allow you to view tourist trails, sites, posts, points of interest and shelters all on a relevant map view.

■ QR Code Scanning - To be able to scan a QR code on a post and either visit that post through the digE-Post app or website.

■ Bluetooth Media Downloading – To download rich, location relevant media from way posts.

■ Viewing of tourist information – To display different aspects of tourist sites. E.g. descriptions, opening hours and contact information.

■ Viewing of planned trips – To see trips you have planned in multiple ways, such as through a calendar or list view.
