About the Aga Khan Education Services
The Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, non-denominational educational networks in the developing world. AKES currently operates over 200 pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher-secondary schools and programmes in diverse geographic locations in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda and the United Arab Emirates. Schools offer their respective country's national curricula; some schools in East Africa and Bangladesh also offer international curricula (IB and British).
AKES originated in the endeavours of the current Aga Khan's grandfather and predecessor, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan. These included community-based literacy classes taught in remote rural settings in South East Asia. The first schools to be set up in the Aga Khan's name were established as early as 1905, and were strikingly progressive for their time and place. They put emphasis on accessibility for all communities, making schooling available to both girls and boys, and stressing the importance of early childhood education.
Today, the AKES network provides a wide-ranging combination of pre-school, primary, secondary, and higher-secondary education schools and programmes in very diverse geographic locations. It employs approximately 3,000 teachers and educates over 75,000 students around the world. In addition to offering the respective national curricula, some countries also offer international curricula (IB and British programmes).
