According to the Puranas of Hinduism, wherever the pieces of the part of Sati fell, the clothes or jewelery worn, Shaktipeeth came into existence. These are called holy shrines. These pilgrimage spots are spread across the Indian subcontinent. The Devi Purana describes the 51 pilgrim spots.

Although 108 Shakti Peethas are mentioned in Devi Bhagwat and 72 Shakti Peethas in Devi Gita, 52 Shaktipeeth are mentioned in Tantrachudamani. Only 51 Shaktipeeths have been discussed in Devi Purana. Some of these 51 Shaktipeeths are also abroad and are distinguished by worship.

It is known that after the partition of India in these 51 Shaktipeeths, 5 were reduced and in today's India there are 42 Shakti Peethas. 1 Shaktipeeth went to Pakistan and 4 to Bangladesh. Of the remaining 4 chairs, 1 is in Sri Lanka, 1 in Tibet and 2 in Nepal.
