Just when you think that you know every card game under the sun, along comes a little known gem from Eastern Europe. 1000 is a point-trick game named for the target score of the game. There are just six cards in each of the suits Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades and there are therefore 120 card points in the pack altogether, and a player who holds both the king and the queen of a suit (a pair or marriage) can obtain additional points by declaring them. Bid wisely because the bids are numbers: the lowest bid is 100 and all bids must be multiples of 5, so the possible bids are 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, etc. The highest bidder undertakes to win at least this number of points from cards in tricks plus declarations.
