The idea behind the concept is to declutter our homes/work places of unwanted stuff, which may be new or used but in good condition - stuff of which we have no use but we do not know who to give it to. As consumers we want to keep pace with the latest new products. But the mounting challenge is: what does one do with the products one is upgrading from. We need to make smart choices about what we do with these products to help ensure a clean environment for future generations. Each time we buy a new product (books, clothes, electronics etc), carbon emissions are sent into the atmosphere, adding to global warming.
This is where the concept of the "Garage Sale" comes in.
At the Garage sale we bring the seller and the buyer in direct contact, where the former can sell his goods at a reasonable price to the latter. The highlight of this event is that while every participant is a consumer, as each one goes back with something, THERE IS NO CARBON FOOTPRINT ADDED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE! On the contrary, each time instead of buying a new product off the shelf, by re-circulating what was already in use, the life of the product is lengthened as it goes to the appropriate end-user, thereby keeping it out of the waste stream.
This year, we are also organising The Farmer’s Market along with The Garage Sale. The idea is to promote healthy, organic living and create a space where the health conscious consumer can buy off directly from the farmer. Therefore we are expecting greater footfall and visibility for our events compared to previous years.Last year we had nearly 2000 people visiting us at Yeshwant club.
The food stalls, cooked by Yi members are added attractions. Products for a cause – products by NGO’s who are given stalls for free to promote their cause are also very well liked by people.
Our philosophy of reuse, recycle, reduce is very much akin to yours.
