Surya Namaskar as a physical exercise is to develop able bodies. Many physical practices have ingrained spiritual values in them. In addition spiritual training is considered as a part of physical training.
Surya Namaskar origins lie in India where they worship Surya (The Sun), the Hindu solar deity. This sequence of movements and asanas can be practised on varying levels of awareness, ranging from that of physical exercise in various styles.
It is a series of 12 physical postures. These alternating backward and forward bending postures flex and stretch the spinal column giving a profound stretch to the whole body.
