Predict Healthcare

The United States has an overwhelming problem in its current hospital systems, and that problem is the overcrowding of their emergency departments. This overcrowding causes a plethora of problems for all patients and staff. These problems consist of increased length of stay, increased medical errors, longer waiting times, ambulance deviations, and financial losses that ultimately hurt the hospital's operations and reputation. The crisis of this problem is not a new one, as it has been problematic since the 1980s without any concrete solutions to this very day. The increase of unscheduled appointments is partly due to the uninsured who lack primary care physicians, increased surgical scheduling, seasonal illnesses, unnecessary tests, and unnecessary visits.

If you have ever been in an emergency department, you would know that time and space are scarce resources, and they are the matter between life and death in treating emergencies and saving lives. Many people are using the ED to treat chronic and non-emergent conditions. While doctors and case managers waste time finding information about patients who come in, the ED department starts filling up at a faster rate. If a patient has been previously admitted to a hospital outside of their current ED's EHR, it is almost impossible to track down that information to provide adequate care.

We intend to build a database that allows all ED's and all users to connect to a single database, containing consolidated/standardized patient data that allows patients and ED's to instantly have access to the correct information at the right time. By doing so, our goals for this database is to reduce delay and lower congestion in the emergency department and subsequently improve patient outcomes, reduce inappropriate ED usage, and increase the efficient use of ED resources.

Purpose of Database Schema

1. Improvement in Patient Outcomes

By allowing hospital staff to see the patient's medical history in real-time, we may see a higher quality of care. This includes decreased medical errors, length of stay, wait time, ambulance deviations, and financial losses.

2. Reductions in Inappropriate ED Usage

Identifying high-use patients and connecting them to other providers could lead to fewer workups and more appropriate care in other settings. This will resolve many unnecessary visits.

3. Efficient Use of ED Resources

As the database will allow delivering more critical information to staff members, this will save clinicians’ time. Also, when patients are in the correct department, this will allow for ED resources to be used in genuinely urgent cases. This would also allow clinicians to not order unnecessary tests as there could be cases in which a test was already performed at another hospital and is already inside the database.

By collecting your medical history, we will be able to give you a prediction on your future health, as well as your risks for subsequent emergency room visits in the near future. You will also have a medical history and analysis file that you can show any new physician you encounter in the future by simply opening the app and clicking on "My Files."
