It was written on a subset of the ECMA-262 JavaScript Programming Language Standard 3rd Edition - December 1999.

JSON is a text format that is completely language independent but uses conventions familiar to programmers from the C language family, including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, and many others.

These properties make JSON an ideal data exchange language.

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is built on two structures:

A collection of name/value pairs. In various languages, this is manifested as an object, record, struct, dictionary, hash table, key list, or associative array. Sorted list of values. In most languages, this is represented as an array, vector, list, or sequence.

This is a universal data structure. Almost all modern programming languages support it in one form or another.

It makes sense that data formats that are interchangeable with programming languages also exist in this structure.
