*** Your Guide to Successfully Dirty Thumbs! ***
Have you ever picked a fresh, red, ripe strawberry warmed by the sun and popped it into your mouth and felt the sweet juice trickle down your throat? Or listened to the snap of a fresh pea released from the pod into your favorite bowl? How about sinking your teeth into a crisply cooked ear of summer sweet corn?
It's a pretty sad testimony to most of the younger generation that they've never experienced the ecstasy of fruits and vegetables prepared within minutes of picking them from the stalks or vines.
It's a shame isn't it? Oh sure, we go to the supermarket and pick up so-called "fresh" fruits and veggies that are imported during the "off season." Melons from the opposite side of the equator, tomatoes grown in a hothouse and fruits chemically treated to last months in cold storage.
Summer vegetables and fruits in winter sounds great. But what is the price we are paying? These crops are processed to the nth degree and grown with pesticides that we turn a blind eye to. All for the sake of convenience.
It's understandable that people like having their fruits and veggies readily available. But, what are we sacrificing? More importantly, what are we teaching our children?
It's all about "instant gratification." If we can't have it NOW we don't want it. But have you considered the price we are paying for that gratification? Is there a better lesson to be teaching our children?
