Kyrgyzstan is truly a place steeped richly in history. Many tribes and nations have called this area of Central Asia home over the millennia. From initial populations of Neanderthals to nomadic groups of Scythians in Kyrgyzstan’s ancient past followed by the Xiongnu, the Gokturks, the Kara Khanid Empire, the Mongols, Timurids and Uzbeks, to the arrival of the Kyrgyz people in the territory now known as Kyrgyzstan sometime in the 15th or 16th century to eventual Russian settlement in 1876 with Soviet Rule ending in 1991. Not to mention the famed Silk Road which had sections coursing through the Tien Shan Mountains and around Lake Issyk Kul which brought ideas, goods, cultures, and religions from both the East and West through Kyrgyzstan. Each and every one of these periods in history has left its mark on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, some truly etched in stone.
