Claude Design is Anthropic's AI-powered visual creation tool, launched April 17, 2026. It turns natural language descriptions into interactive prototypes, slide decks, landing pages, and UI wireframes, output that's functional HTML and CSS, not static mockups.
It's built on Claude Opus 4.7 and available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers through the Claude web app (https://claude.ai/) and desktop client, at https://claude.com/product/design.
What Claude Design Does
Unlike image generators that produce static pictures, Claude Design outputs working code. The prototypes you get are clickable, fillable, and navigable; you can share a link, and someone can actually use the prototype, not just look at a screenshot.
Six common use cases:
- Product managers sketch functional flows and hand them to developers as interactive wireframes
- Designers generate multiple style directions in minutes, then refine the best one
- Founders and sales teams build pitch decks that export directly to PowerPoint or Canva
- Marketing creates landing pages and social media assets without touching Figma
- Developers validate UI ideas quickly and hand the prototype to Claude Code for production implementation
- Anyone can build creative prototypes with voice interaction, 3D elements, and shader effects
The tool crossed one million users in its first week and has grown steadily since.

Learn MoreHow Claude Design Works
The workflow is conversation-driven, not template-driven. You describe what you want in plain English, and before generating anything, Claude asks clarifying questions: who's the audience, what's the preferred style, what format should the output take. This back-and-forth mirrors how a human designer scopes a project.
Once it has enough context, Claude generates a functional HTML/CSS/JS prototype in a side-by-side view, chat on the left, live preview on the right. You can then:
- Click any element to leave a comment or suggest a change
- Use sliders to adjust attributes like spacing, color intensity, or font size
- Edit text directly in the canvas
- Ask for a completely different style direction
The output isn't locked in. You iterate conversationally until the design looks right, then export it.
Design System Integration
For teams, Claude Design reads your existing design files and codebases to build a project-specific design system. It extracts colors, fonts, component patterns, and spacing rules, then applies them automatically to new designs.
This means the prototypes it generates match your brand, not a generic template. It also means team members who aren't designers can produce on-brand output without memorizing the style guide.
The /design-sync command in Claude Code pulls design system definitions into coding projects. This creates a two-way bridge between the design tool and the code editor. The same components, colors, and spacing rules are available in both environments.
Output and Export Options
Claude Design prototypes can be exported in several formats:
- Interactive link for sharing with teammates or user testing
- PDF for documentation or approval workflows
- PPTX for presentations
- Canva for further visual editing
- HTML as a standalone file for hosting or handoff
- Handoff bundle for Claude Code, turning the prototype into a starting point for production development
Since late June 2026, Claude Design shares usage limits with Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code, meaning most users have more effective capacity than when it launched with a separate quota.

Learn MoreWhat Makes It Different from Traditional Design Tools
The core difference is the entry barrier. Figma, Sketch, and similar tools require learning an interface, understanding layers and components, and developing visual design skills. Claude Design replaces that learning curve with conversation.
This doesn't mean it replaces professional designers. What it does is compress the execution time for producing a first draft. A designer who used to spend a morning building wireframes can now generate multiple directions in an hour and spend the saved time on higher-value decisions about structure, flow, and user experience.
Anthropic's internal data suggests a single designer using Claude Design can support roughly seven concurrent projects, up from the typical two to three.
The AI Taste System
A notable design choice: Anthropic built an "AI slop detector" into Claude Design's system prompt. It's a set of rules that flag and reject the visual clichés common in AI-generated designs: gradient backgrounds, emoji decorations, the Inter font used by default, white backgrounds with pure black text, and non-8px-grid spacing.
The most interesting rule is one that detects Claude's own default aesthetic, a warm cream background with elegant serif headings and terracotta accents that it tends to apply regardless of context. The system prompt explicitly instructs Claude to recognize this as a template and override it when the project calls for something different.
These rules aren't user-facing. They run in the background, steering the output away from looking "AI-generated" and toward looking intentional and project-appropriate.
