Kuromasu can be classified as a binary determination puzzle, like Hitori or Nurikabe, or as object placement puzzle like Battleships or Star Battle (Two not Touch). The puzzle is invented by the Japanese puzzle publishing company Nikoli and it first appeared in 1991. The word kuromasu is Japanese and translates to something like "where are the black fields".
